Week 2 - Live

News Media has changed due to Media Convergence in many ways. The first is the
constantly increasing access to information, in multiple ways. The first being that news companies
rely less on community outreach and going out and gathering information to report in the past,
and now using wireservices to get information for stories. Another is that information doesn’t need
to be print to reach a mass audience, using online apps and websites to share information (exit of
the newspaper, intro of the blog era). The second way its changed is its responsibility, being that
news carries credibility and can lose popularity when revealed to be less credible (ex: Reporter
making the Shut up and dribble comment to LeBron), and that reporting news and information
can now be anonymous, where reporters had to use an alias, they now can use a username
rather than their real name when reporting compromising news (a result of change from print to
digital reporting). Lastly the idea of using social media to share news, and not just one source,
being that devices constantly yield new ways to update people, so posting links and headlines
to social media increases readers and shares information faster.

An example of how a traditional media outlet has embraced media convergence, is how sports
media now offers streaming services that are a workaround of not having a cable package. NFL
has also capitalized on the idea that consumers have a short attention span, they offer NFL
Redzone, a station that essentially shows and transitions between the big action in games.
Previously, they had to broadcast onto cable networks like CBS, Fox Sports, or ESPN.
Now they can reach a broader audience and capitalize on the internet and cable as well.

Live interactivity is an extremely interesting way to give live updates to an ongoing event. They’re
extremely popular in sports, as people unable to watch a game are able to get realtime updates to
matches they want to know about, and can get almost as much information as watching depending
on who is broadcasting the information. It is also extremely helpful to look at information that
corresponds to a live event in realtime after the fact, to see specific times that things are
happening, and look at an event almost “on paper”.
